Speculations Concerning Information Retrieval

Various schemes of classification and measures of relevance are reviewed from the point of view of how they might fit into a general theory of information retrieval. Problems in such areas as syntax, semantics, and library economics that would have to be considered by theory are touched upon. Also discussed are contributions that might be expected from such related studies as are being made in mechanical translation, artificial intelligence, and information theory.
